Covalent Bond
A stand-alone sculpture fabricated in a modular fashion using a combination of stainless steel and aluminium including cast relief pants in base, height 4100mm; plus in-situ concrete relief panels integral with adjacent seating.
Covalent Bond contemplates the imperceptible forces that bond water molecules and other structures together and how these forces operate in both nature and culture. The seemingly random stacked forms are inspired by both water vessels of ancient Greece including the hydra, amphorae and anodised drinking beakers. These abstract forms provide the canvas for an array of water imagery found in the local Moretan Bay water biology, thus acting as a metaphor for the absence and presence of water on the site over time. Through process, the artist references Newstead’s history of assembly, fabrication, boat building and the location of storage vessels including water tanks known to be in use in the area.
Covalent Bond was commissioned in accordance with the Brisbane City Council’s Art in Public Places policy.
